The children of John MacCuaig and Ann or Nancy MacDougall

Child #7- Nancy McCuaig was christened 15 Jul 1823.

Nancy is the second of the two sisters that  were willed land in Ontario, Canada by brother Peter McLeod.  The first sister being Margaret.  (see blog dated 13 November 2010 - Peter McLeod)

We should note that in many of the Rothesay, Bute records Nancy used the alternative name Agnes or Ann.  The names Ann, Nancy and Agnes are all interchangeable at this time period in Scotland.

Nancy married Neil Johnston 31 May 1846  in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

We have found records of six children being born to this couple. Hugh, Agnes, Marion, Robert, John McLeod and Margaret.

Nancy died 21 Jul 1871 at Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
"Agnes Johnston - Widow of Neil Johnston, Carter / died 1871 July 21 3h 0m P.M. 1 New Vennel, Rothesay / F / 48 years / father - John McLeod, farmer / mother - unknown / Cause of death - Phthises Pulmanlis - some time as certified by J. C. Maddenar M.D. / informant - Marion Johnston, Daughter, present / Registered 1871 July 22'd at Rothesay."

The cause of death stated in Nancy’s death registration is Phthises Pulmanlis an archaic medical term referring to a quick running, fatal consumption of the lungs (tuberculosis).

Spouse: Neil Johnston was born about 1819 in Rothesay in the County of Bute, Scotland.  This is where we find his family on the 1841 census and also the location that he reports as his birth location on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census.  His parents are Daniel Johnston and Sarah Bone.

He dies 13 April 1871 at Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. His death was just a few months previous to Nancy’s death.

Census: We find Neil on the 1841 census with his parents in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. We have not been able to pinpoint which of the many Ann or Nancy or Agnes McCuaig or McLeod’s (or variant spellings) on the Scottish census records is actually our Nancy.

In the 1851 census we find their family in Rothesay, Bute (Scotland, County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay(#558), Division 17, Page 14, #45 Old Manse, FHL film # 1042358).  They have three children, Hugh, Agnes and Marion.

On the 1861 census the family is still in Rothesay but a bit of a different location.  They now seem to be located at 13 Bridge End Road rather than at 45 Old Manse as in 1841. (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay (#558), Division 6, Page 3, #13 Bridge End Street, FHL film # 103813). Hugh is not with the family.  Children Robert, John and Margaret have joined the family.

The 1871 census finds this family in two locations.  Neil is listed with his sister Sarah and his daughter Margaret  at 31 Mill Street (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay #558 Division 15, Page 4) while Nancy (Agnes) is  in a different location  #1 New Vennel with  their children Marion and John (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay #558, Division 12, Page 1, #1 New Vernell, FHL film # 103973).

Why separate households?  I can only speculate.  The census was taken on April 3, 1871.  Neil died just ten days later on April 13 of Typhus Fever.  Nancy died in July of the same year of tuberculosis,  Perhaps she was too ill to care for him.  In addition to these sad facts we have learned that in February of that same year their son Robert also died of consumption.  His address on his death registration is #1 New Vennel   (Nancy’s address) and the informant is his father Neil so it appears the family was intact at that time.

Daughter Agness died in 1866 of the same disease that claimed her mother’s life just five years later.   Before the end of 1873 Marion and John McLeod are also dead  as a result of the progressive wasting away effects of this devastating form of this same disease which  leaves Margaret as the only living child in this family.
