Hugh and Mary had six children. Margaret, Catherine, Donald, Alexander, Janet and Hugh.

Hugh is with his father on the farm of Giol on the 1841 census. On the 1851 census we find Hugh, age 17, living with his paternal Grandmother Catherine Campbell on the farm of Giol and he is a Tailor Apprentice.

The 1861 census finds Hugh with his wife Mary and two children Margaret and Catherine living on the farm of Lower Killeyan.

By the 1871 census Donald, Alexander, Janet and Hugh have joined the family. Janet Johnston, age 56, is a boarder. Mary is a widow, Hugh having drowned off the Mull of Oa in 1868. Their  eldest child Margaret is not with the family but is listed with her uncle John Campbell  on the farm of Lower Killeyan just a few houses away from her mother.

On the 1881 census Mary appears to be living in the same location with two of her sons Donald and Hugh.

She is still here on the 1891 census but has two grandsons Hugh Campbell and John McLean living with her. Hugh is the illegitimate son of Mary’s daughter Catherine Campbell.  John is the illegitimate son of Mary’s daughter Janet Campbell.  Mary also has a boarder named Isabella Johnston age 70 living with her.

Mary is in the same location on the 1901 census but is living by herself.

Tree 1 – Generation 3 – ii Duncan Campbell

ii Duncan Campbell (Margaret2 John1) the second child of Alexander Campbell and Margaret McCuaig was christened 5 Aug 1831. The family was still living on the farm of Giol in the Parish of Kildalton, Argyll, Scotland. His mother’s surname has also been misinterpreted as McCuay.

Note: in 1833 the quad sacra parish  of Oa was formed. No one moved but the area where the farm of Giol was located was now considered to be in the Parish of Oa where as previously it had been considered part of the Parish of Kildalton.

Duncan and Janet had nine children. Ann / female child / Margaret / Betty / Alexander / Donald / Catherine / Mary and Marion.

Duncan was with his parents on both the 1841 and 1851 census.

On the 1861 census he appears with wife Janet and daughter Margaret age 1 living on the farm of Giol. Daughter Ann age 3 is not with her parents but appears to be with Grandparents Alexander and Margaret Campbell who also live on the farm of Giol. She is listed as a daughter to Alexander but I believe she is actually a  granddaughter.

The 1871 census finds the family on the farm of Lower Killeyan which is right beside the farm of Giol. Children Betsy, Alexander, Donald and Catherine have joined the family and they have a visitor Christian McDougall age 76 who is deaf and dumb.  Daughter Margaret appears to be staying with her grandparents Alexander and Margaret Campbell just a few houses away from her parents also on the farm of Lower Killeyan.

On the 1881 census Mary and Marion are new additions to the family which is still living on the farm of Lower Killeyan.

On the 1891 census Duncan is a widower with children Alexander, Katie and Marion living at home and the family continues to reside at Lower Killeyan.

Son Donald is not living with his father but may possibly be the Donald Campbell found working as a farm servant for an Archibald McMillan family in  the Parish of Gigha & Cara on the farm of Liem. This parish is made up of two small islands found between the Island of Islay and the mainland portion of Argyll. The age appears to be correct and the birth location of Islay, Argyllshire is correct.

Daughter Mary, who is also not with her father, may possibly be the Mary Campbell found working as a domestic servant with a William Hean family at 40 McCulloch Street in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.  The age seems to be correct.  The birth place of Islay, Argyllshire is correct and she marries in Glasgow in 1893. I could see no other reasonable possibilty in Scotland for either Donald or Mary.

Janet died 9 April 1889 at Killeyan, Parish of Oa, Argyll, Scotland

The 1901 census finds Duncan still in Lower Killeyan, with children Alexander and Marion at home.  In addition a farm servant John McLean age 15 is with the family.  John McLean is the illegitmate son of Duncan's niece Janet Campbell. Catharine (Kate) married in 1895.

Duncan died 10 April 1814 on the farm of Lower Killeyan in the Parish of Oa, Argyll, Scotland

Tree 1 – Generation 3 – i Dougald Campbell

We shall start with the children of Margaret and Alexander Campbell. Margaret was also known as Peggy or Maggie in the census records. It is believed that they married
about 1828 based on the christening record of their eldest known child Dougald in 1829.

i Dougald Campbell (Margaret2, John1) the first child of Alexander Campbell and Margaret McCuaig was christened 4 Feb 1829. The family was living at the farm of Giol in the Parish of Kildalton, Argyll, Scotland.

  1829 / Feb 4 / Doug'd Alex Campbell & Marg't McCuaig
Source: Church of Scotland, County of Argyll, Parish of Kildalton #(541), Volume 2, 1820-1854, Baptisms, page 12; , FHL film #1041079

The surname McCuaig has been misinterpreted as McCuay on some records such as the IGI and OPR but in the original register it is definitely McCuaig. In this record the mother’s name has also been misinterpreted as Mary but again a check of the original records shows the mother’s name as Marg’t.

There is no additional record of this child. It is possible that he died as a young child. If he did die young it was most likely before 1839. Although there is no proof that he did die, we do know that he did not appear on the1841 census with the family and there was a second child named Dugald born in 1839.

Tree 1 - Generation Three – Grandchildren

Following is the descendancy chart showing the third generation or the grandchildren of John MacCuaig and Ann or Nancy MacDougall. I know of 25 Grandchildren.

For those who may not be used to the system I am using - the numbers 1 or 2 or 3 in front of name pertains to which generation the person was born in.

The Roman Numerals (i, ii, iii)  in front of the names are the Grandchildren being numbered sequentially in this generation.  Spouses are not being numbered.

The + behind a name indicates that person has children.

When we start discussing the grandchildren you will find behind each name there are other names and numbers in brackets like this  Dougald Campbell (Margaret2, John1).  The names follow the child’s ancestors in order back to John McCuaig.   The numbers  indicate each person’s  generation.

Generation Two – Child #8 Hugh McCuaig or McLeod

Children of John MacCuaig and Ann MacDougall

Child #8 – Hugh McCuaig was christened 5 December 1826 at Giol

Beyond his christening record we have not found any record of Hugh in Scotland.  He does not appear on the 1841 census in Scotland.  The first available census in Canada is the 1851 census but he died in 1849 previous to that census.

Hugh appears to have travelled to Canada with or perhaps following his brothers.  No record of a marriage has been found.

We were made aware of his existence in Canada when we found his gravestone.

He was buried at St Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery which is located at Concession 6 Lot 10, Strange, King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.  The tombstone is broken but is described as follows:

Tree1 – Generation 2 – Child 7 – Nancy McCuaig or McLeod

The children of John MacCuaig and Ann or Nancy MacDougall

Child #7- Nancy McCuaig was christened 15 Jul 1823.

Nancy is the second of the two sisters that  were willed land in Ontario, Canada by brother Peter McLeod.  The first sister being Margaret.  (see blog dated 13 November 2010 - Peter McLeod)

We should note that in many of the Rothesay, Bute records Nancy used the alternative name Agnes or Ann.  The names Ann, Nancy and Agnes are all interchangeable at this time period in Scotland.

Nancy married Neil Johnston 31 May 1846  in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

We have found records of six children being born to this couple. Hugh, Agnes, Marion, Robert, John McLeod and Margaret.

Nancy died 21 Jul 1871 at Rothesay, Bute, Scotland
"Agnes Johnston - Widow of Neil Johnston, Carter / died 1871 July 21 3h 0m P.M. 1 New Vennel, Rothesay / F / 48 years / father - John McLeod, farmer / mother - unknown / Cause of death - Phthises Pulmanlis - some time as certified by J. C. Maddenar M.D. / informant - Marion Johnston, Daughter, present / Registered 1871 July 22'd at Rothesay."
Source: Scottish Civil Registration - Deaths, 1871, County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay, Page 43, Entry #127, FHL Film # 0224611.

The cause of death stated in Nancy’s death registration is Phthises Pulmanlis an archaic medical term referring to a quick running, fatal consumption of the lungs (tuberculosis).

Spouse: Neil Johnston was born about 1819 in Rothesay in the County of Bute, Scotland.  This is where we find his family on the 1841 census and also the location that he reports as his birth location on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census.  His parents are Daniel Johnston and Sarah Bone.

He dies 13 April 1871 at Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. His death was just a few months previous to Nancy’s death.

Census: We find Neil on the 1841 census with his parents in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. We have not been able to pinpoint which of the many Ann or Nancy or Agnes McCuaig or McLeod’s (or variant spellings) on the Scottish census records is actually our Nancy.

In the 1851 census we find their family in Rothesay, Bute (Scotland, County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay(#558), Division 17, Page 14, #45 Old Manse, FHL film # 1042358).  They have three children, Hugh, Agnes and Marion.

On the 1861 census the family is still in Rothesay but a bit of a different location.  They now seem to be located at 13 Bridge End Road rather than at 45 Old Manse as in 1841. (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay (#558), Division 6, Page 3, #13 Bridge End Street, FHL film # 103813). Hugh is not with the family.  Children Robert, John and Margaret have joined the family.

The 1871 census finds this family in two locations.  Neil is listed with his sister Sarah and his daughter Margaret  at 31 Mill Street (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay #558 Division 15, Page 4) while Nancy (Agnes) is  in a different location  #1 New Vennel with  their children Marion and John (County of Bute, Parish of Rothesay #558, Division 12, Page 1, #1 New Vernell, FHL film # 103973).

Why separate households?  I can only speculate.  The census was taken on April 3, 1871.  Neil died just ten days later on April 13 of Typhus Fever.  Nancy died in July of the same year of tuberculosis,  Perhaps she was too ill to care for him.  In addition to these sad facts we have learned that in February of that same year their son Robert also died of consumption.  His address on his death registration is #1 New Vennel   (Nancy’s address) and the informant is his father Neil so it appears the family was intact at that time.

Daughter Agness died in 1866 of the same disease that claimed her mother’s life just five years later.   Before the end of 1873 Marion and John McLeod are also dead  as a result of the progressive wasting away effects of this devastating form of this same disease which  leaves Margaret as the only living child in this family.

Tree 1 – Generation Two – Child #6 ? McCuaig

Children of John MacCuaig and Ann or Nancy MacDougall

Child #6 - This child was christened 10 July 1819. The parents were located at Giol, Kildalton, Argyll, Scotland.  No gender or name was recorded.
1819 / July 10 / [ blank space] to John McCuaig    Giol.
Source: Church of Scotland,  County of Argyll, Parish of Kildalton #(541), Volume 1, Baptisms, 1723-1819, Page 75  Frame 161, FHL film #1041079

As stated in previous posts John and Ann seem to be the only John McCuaig couple located at Giol having children in this time period so even though the mother’s name is not given in the christening record we feel assured that this is the right couple.

A big problem is that we don’t know anything more about this child other than it was christened. There is a possibility that  Peter ( the child listed just previously as Child #5) and this child may be the same person. Because at the present time we have no information regarding Peter’s birth and because we know so little about this child we cannot assume that they are the same person. They may be the same person. They may be two different people.  We just don’t know.

There don’t seem to be any additional mention of this child in any of the rest of the family's records.

Tree #1 – Generation 2 – Child 5 Peter McCuaig or McLeod

The children of John MacCuaig and Ann or Nancy MacDougall

Child # 5 – Peter McCuaig or McLeod

There is a lot that we don’t know about Peter.  We are not even sure when he was born.  We have assigned him this spot in the family order because there was a large gap here.  It seemed possible that he might belong here.  We suspect he may have born sometime between 1814 and 1818.

We do know that his parents and his siblings were all located on the farm of Giol in Kildalton, Argyll Scotland  (on the Island of Islay) so it seems likely that he too was born there.

We do know that he was found purchasing land in 1847 in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.  The land was located at Concession 7 SW1/4 Lot 12 (50 acres) and E1/4 of W1/2 Lot 13 (50 acres), King Township, York County, Ontario. Lot 12 was purchased  in 1847 for ₤12/10s; Lot 13 was purchased in 1850 for 175

At his death both lots were deeded to his brother and wife, Donald and Catherine McLeod, for life, after which Lot 13 was to go to his sisters Margaret and Nancy McLeod in Scotland and  Lot 12 was willed to his nephew John McLeod (son of his brother Angus) in Canada.

His will (dated 31 October 1851) was probated  21 Jul 1852.

He was buried at St Andrews Presbyterian Cemetery which is located at Concession 6 Lot 10, Strange, King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.  The tombstone is broken but is described as follows:
Row 2 Stone 16 (broken, in the ground, finger pointing upwards, sun rays)
MCLEOD
In memory of / Hugh McLeod / died Jan 21, 1849 / Aged 22 years / also / Peter McLeod (broken stone)
Source: (York Region Branch OGS), FHL book 971.354 V3 no. 4765.

You can see that any indication of his birth date or age at death that might have originally been on the stone is now lost.  He has not been found on the 1851/52 census. He does not appear to be in Scotland for the 1841 census.  We have not found any record of a marriage.

As we searched and found the children in the family of John and Nancy McCuaig we found a child christened 10 Jul 1819 (see the family descendancy chart posted to this blog Saturday Oct 30, 2010).  As with Donald, no name was recorded for this child.  There is a possibility that Peter could be this unnamed child but until we can find something – ANYTHING – to indicate what his age might be we can’t make that assumption.  The possibility that there were two children is as great as the possibility that there was only one.  We just don’t know.

Tree #1 – Generation 2 – Child 4 Angus McCuaig or McLeod

The children of John MacCuaig and Ann MacDougall

Child # 4 - Angus McCuaig or McLeod

The actual birth or christening of Angus is proving to be a bit elusive. We know who his brothers are.  Because we know who the parents of his brothers are, we know who his parents are.  We have an estimated birth year based on the information found on his tombstone. Following is the inscription found on his tombstone:

 "In memory of
Angus McLeod
who died
Dec 20, 1863 [sic]
Age 50 years
Native of Islay, Argyleshire
Scotland
Friends nor physicians could not save
This mortal body from the grave
Nor can the grave confine it here
When Christ our Saviour doth appear."

                      Angus Tombston

According to stories passed down in the family he was killed by a falling tree while clearing the land. In 1978 some of his direct descendants were still living on the land and chances are that they still do.  The farm is on the township line separating Reach Township from Brock  Township. Their church and cemetery are one mile across this line in Brock Township.

The death year of 1863 on the tombstone appears to be incorrect.  Angus died intestate (without a will).  His wife Sarah petitioned the court for probate in order to settle his estate.  It is in this Petition that we learn his actual death date was 20 December1862.  If the age 50 at death is correct then we can calculate that he was born about 1812. This calculated birth year is supported somewhat by census records.  On the 1851/52 census he is recorded as being 36 years of age which would give a birth year of about 1815/1816, On the 1861 census he reports that he is 48 years of age which gives a birth year of about 1813.  Some twenty years later Angus's hiers signed a quit claim in order to clear the title so that his son John could buy the land.

                                                                                                                                                    Angus Marriage

Spouse: Sarah McGill.  To date we have not found a christening record for Sarah.  Her birth year of about 1811 is based on the age of 40 years on the 1851/52 census, 50 years on the 1861 census and 60 years on the 1871 census.

We learn that Sarah's mother's name is Margaret on the 1861 census.  Sarah's daughter Mary J(ane) age 16 is living with a widow (her grandmother) Margaret McGill age 65 and Donald McGill (her uncle), a Tailor, in  Prince Albert which is in District 2 of Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.

Donald McGill and Mary J(ane) McLeod are listed on the 1861 census twice.  Once in District 2 as just noted and again In District 5 of Reach Township, Ontario County where Mary Jane's parents and siblings are listed.  In the District 5 listing Donald McGill, a Tailor,  is marked as a visitor in the McLeod family while Mary J(ane) is marked as absent.  That Mary Jane is with Margaret McGill supports family tradition that Sarah's mother, Margaret, and brother were also in Ontario and that her brother Donald was a tailor. It also leads to the speculation that Sarah's father may be named William.

Angus and Sarah seem to have followed the traditional Scottish naming pattern in that the first two sons are named after their fathers and the first two daughters are named after their mothers.  We know that the eldest daughter was named Ann, which would be after Angus's mother and the second daughter was named Margaret, which would be after Sarah's mother.  We also know that the eldest son was named William and the second eldest son was named John, which would be after Angus's father.  It could make sense that Sarah's father's name  was William.

Just recently we found  Donald McGill's christening in the parish of Killean (Killean and Kilchenzie), Argyll, Scotland.  A search on Scotlands People for a Donald McGill,  mother  Margaret,  in Argyll,  born between1815 to 1820 found only one result.  It is in the same parish where Angus and Sarah were married. All the parameters seem to fit.  The father's name  in this christening record is indeed William.   If Donald is Sarah's brother, as we believe him to be, then her father is William.

Sarah died 15 November 1886 In Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada

Angus and Sarah lived on Concession 14 Lot 15, Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.  Family tradition states they were on this land since the mid 1830’s. This would make sense.  William was born in 1833 and John was born in 1834 in Scotland.  Ann was born about 1836 in Ontario.  We find the family in Ontario on the 1851/52 census  at that location  It is probable that they were there for many years before that time.  Angus did  not purchase this land until 1860.  He died in 1862.

Census: We have found Angus and Sarah on the 1851/52 census in Ontario County,  Reach Township ( District 3 Page1  line 24-36 NAC film # C11743).  It is remarkable that we found them at all.  There is only one page of the 1851/52 census for Reach Township that has survived and they are on that one page.  They have a large family so they take up most of the page.

They are found with their children William18, Ann 16. Margaret 14. John 12, Sarah 10, Janet 8, Jane 6. Catherine 4, Elizabeth 3. and no name 1. It is our understanding that another son John, christened 2 February 1834 in Scotland, died during the sea voyage from Scotland to Canada.

There is another child listed with the McLeod family on the 1851 census.  He is listed at the end of the McLeod family after the children previously mentioned. He is Angus McLeod, male. age 8.  We are not sure who this child is or who his parents are and he doesn’t appear with this family again on a census.

Our Angus McLeod has also been found on the 1851/52 Agricultural census, Ontario County, Reach Township District 3 Page 35 line 30 Concession 14 Lot 15. He had 100 acres land of which 40 are under cultivation (12 acres of wheat, 10 acres oats, 2 acres potatoes, 4 acres hay).  He produced 40 pounds of wool  and 50 yards of cloth. 60 acres were considered woods or wild

They are on the same location on the 1861 census. (Ontario County, Reach Township, District 5; page 6; line 11-24; National Archives film C1058) Margaret is not with the family.  She married Cyrus Dennis Eck in 1856 and was living in Newmarket, York County on the 1861 census.  We learn that Jane is actually Mary J(ane) and the child with no name on the 1851/52 census is Charlotte. William, Mary Jane and Elizabeth are marked absent. William age 27, is working away from home as a labourer for Alex McLean in Brock Township. Mary Jane age 16, is living with her uncle, Donald McGill, and her grandmother, Margaret McGill, in the town of Prince Albert which is in District 2 of Reach Township, Ontario County. There is no information as to Elizabeth’s where abouts.

There is also a (child) Hill, female, age 1 with the family. This is Sarah McLeod’s daughter, Annie J.  Sarah and the child’s father, Thomas Hill, were married on 25 December 1861

Donald C. McGill, a tailor, born in Scotland age 41 is visiting the McLeod family.  He is Sarah McGill’s brother and lives in the town of Prince Albert  in District 2 of Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.

The 1871 census finds Sarah, now a widow, living with her son John and daughter Scharlett (Charlotte) still on the farm in Reach Township. (Ontario County, Reach Township, District B4; page 59; lines 12-16;National Archives film C9976)

We have not found Sarah on the 1881 census. She died in 1886 in Reach Township before the 1891 census.

I have found no additional information on this child.  It is possible that he died young.  He does not seem to be on the 1841 census unless he has gone someplace other than Islay.

Tree #1- Generation 2 – Child 2 Donald MacCuaig

You will note that there is no name or gender given for the child being christened. We feel confident based on other material such as census records and land records in Ontario, Canada that this is Donald’s christening record.

He married Catherine Keith – also of Giol – on 11 March 1838 in Oa.  She was the daughter of George Keith and Margaret MacDougall

Donald appears to have died sometime between the 1861 census and 14 Jul 1864, probably in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.  He was living in that area on the 1861 census with his wife.  This date is before civil registration began in Ontario and as of yet we have not found any burial information.  Catherine marries William Rose on 14 July 1864.

Spouse: Catherine Keith was christened 24 April  1811 Giol, Kildalton, Argyll, Scotland (on the Island of Islay)

She married secondly William Rose 14 Jul 1864.  William appears to be a widower with children. He was found on the 1861 census with two male children Alexander Rose (age 19 ) and William Rose (age 14) who appear to possibly be his sons.
William Rose: Birth Place: Elgin County, Ontario, Canada / Residence: King Township /  Age: 58  / Father Name: James / Mother Name: Anne Brandon
Catharine McLeod: Age: 50  / Birth Place: Islay  / Residence: King Township  / Father Name: George Keith /  Mother Name: Mary McDougall                         Marriage Date: 14 Jul 1864

You will note that Catherine’s mother’s name is this record is given as Mary which is different than what was recorded in Catherine’s christening record.  Was this a transcription error  (Marg’t  and Mary can often look very similar) or perhaps an error on the part of the clerk who recorded the marriage or was it an error on Catherine’s part?

Catherine died 1 Sep 1898 King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada
"Catherine Rose / female / Date of Death Sept 1, 1898 / age  85 / Location of death Lot 12 Con 7 King / Farmers widow / born Scotland / cause tumors on bowels 2 yrs / Physician Dr. Brenton / Religion Presbyterian / informant Wm Rose / registered  Sept 1, 1898"

Catherine does not appear to have had children of her own with either husband.

The first census in which Donald and Catherine appear is 1861 in Ontario, Canada.  They are living in York County in King Township. Donald is 52 and Catharine is 45 years of age.  They are using the surname McLeod not McCuaig.

Listed with them is a John Brown, age 18, a labourer, who was born in England  and a Christina Redmond who was born in Canada West age 8 attending school.  I do not know who they are or why they were living with Donald and Catherine.   Donald also appears on the Agricultural census for that year at Concession 7 Lot 13 W1/4 with 50 acres of land.

By the 1871 census Donald appears to have died and Catherine has remarried.  She is now age 56 and is with her husband William Rose age 66. With them is a William Rose age 25 who I assume is William’s son. Also Christina Redman age 19.  They appear to live at Concession  7 Lot 12 owner 49 acres.  There is a very interesting story about this piece of land.

Family lore has it that Donald came to Canada either along with or near to the time that several of his brothers also came to Canada – namely Angus, Peter and Hugh.  Angus married and had a large family with three sons one of whom died as an infant and two surviving into manhood. Donald married but had no children.  Hugh died as a fairly young man, not long after coming to Canada – never marrying that we are aware of.

Peter was quite well off having a farm covering  two 50 acre lots which sat side by side.  Lot 13 was purchased in 1847 for 12 pounds 10 shillings while Lot 12 was purchased in 1850 for 175 pounds.  In his will we learn that he bequeathed both lots to his brother Donald and his wife Catherine for their lifetime.  When they died, Lot 12 was bequeathed to John McLeod, son of his brother Angus: and the other, Lot 13, was then to revert to two sisters, Margaret and Nancy, still in Scotland.

Peter died in 1852.  Donald died sometime between 1861-1864. Donald’s wife remarried in 1864. Her second husband William Rose may have been the William Rose who died in King Township in 1883.  Catharine continued living on the farm until her death in 1898. In the Ontario land records Quit Claims for this parcel of land was found.  It seems that the Rose family wanted to buy the land but of course the sisters in Scotland (or their heirs) had to sign the Quit Claim stating they had no interest in claiming the land. The document was signed in 1900 with the names of the sister’s heirs and their locations in Scotland which set us on the path to finding our Scottish family.

The 1881 census finds William Rose and Catherine still on the farm.  He is now aged 75 and she is 64. With them is a Redmond family. Frank age 45 / Christina age 28 / William age 9 / James age 4.

Later census records will reveal that Frank (or Frances) is most likely a brother to Christina.  He is referred to as uncle by her children on the 1901 census. William (1872) and James (1877) Redmond are children of Christina. It is possible that their births may have been illegitimate although it doesn’t state so on their birth registrations.   I have found both of them in the census and other records using the surnames Redmond, Redman, or Rose.  On William’s birth registration the elder William Rose (husband of Catherine) is listed as father.  I have seen this elsewhere when grandfathers accepted the responsibility of raising the child as his own. On the 1891 census Catherine refers to Christina as a daughter.  Christina lives continually with Catherine from before she was 8 years of age until Catherine's death in 1898.  On James birth registration his father is listed as James Cassidy and he appears to use this surname as an adult.  He is James Cassidy on the 1911 census and as the informant on his mother’s death registration in 1929.  In 1891 Christina married  a widower George A. Stinson and has two daughters Florence Ethel (1892) and Maud Elizabeth (1894). George dies in 1898.  Frank Redmond is living with Christina on the 1901 and 1911 census and appears to still be single.

The 1891 census finds the family living in the same location.  Catherine is now a widow as her husband having probably died in 1883.  Christina  is listed as a married daughter but still uses the surname Redmond..The two boys William and James are using the surname Rose.

By the 1901 census Catharine is deceased.  We find that William and James are still using the surname Rose.  Christina is now a widow herself  having married in November of 1891 and her husband dying in 1898.  However she is listed  with the surname Rose. Her two daughters use the surname Stinson. Her brother Frances is living with them.

On the 1911 census William is not listed with the family. James is using the surname Cassidy. Christina and daughter Laura are using the surname Stinson while it appears that Florence is using the surname Ezard having married George Tilford Ezard 31 May 1911. Uncle Frank is still with the family.
