You will note that there is no name or gender given for the child being christened. We feel confident based on other material such as census records and land records in Ontario, Canada that this is Donald’s christening record.

He married Catherine Keith – also of Giol – on 11 March 1838 in Oa.  She was the daughter of George Keith and Margaret MacDougall

Donald appears to have died sometime between the 1861 census and 14 Jul 1864, probably in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada.  He was living in that area on the 1861 census with his wife.  This date is before civil registration began in Ontario and as of yet we have not found any burial information.  Catherine marries William Rose on 14 July 1864.

Spouse: Catherine Keith was christened 24 April  1811 Giol, Kildalton, Argyll, Scotland (on the Island of Islay)

She married secondly William Rose 14 Jul 1864.  William appears to be a widower with children. He was found on the 1861 census with two male children Alexander Rose (age 19 ) and William Rose (age 14) who appear to possibly be his sons.
William Rose: Birth Place: Elgin County, Ontario, Canada / Residence: King Township /  Age: 58  / Father Name: James / Mother Name: Anne Brandon
Catharine McLeod: Age: 50  / Birth Place: Islay  / Residence: King Township  / Father Name: George Keith /  Mother Name: Mary McDougall                         Marriage Date: 14 Jul 1864

You will note that Catherine’s mother’s name is this record is given as Mary which is different than what was recorded in Catherine’s christening record.  Was this a transcription error  (Marg’t  and Mary can often look very similar) or perhaps an error on the part of the clerk who recorded the marriage or was it an error on Catherine’s part?

Catherine died 1 Sep 1898 King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada

Catherine does not appear to have had children of her own with either husband.

The first census in which Donald and Catherine appear is 1861 in Ontario, Canada.  They are living in York County in King Township. Donald is 52 and Catharine is 45 years of age.  They are using the surname McLeod not McCuaig.

Listed with them is a John Brown, age 18, a labourer, who was born in England  and a Christina Redmond who was born in Canada West age 8 attending school.  I do not know who they are or why they were living with Donald and Catherine.   Donald also appears on the Agricultural census for that year at Concession 7 Lot 13 W1/4 with 50 acres of land.

By the 1871 census Donald appears to have died and Catherine has remarried.  She is now age 56 and is with her husband William Rose age 66. With them is a William Rose age 25 who I assume is William’s son. Also Christina Redman age 19.  They appear to live at Concession  7 Lot 12 owner 49 acres.  There is a very interesting story about this piece of land.

Family lore has it that Donald came to Canada either along with or near to the time that several of his brothers also came to Canada – namely Angus, Peter and Hugh.  Angus married and had a large family with three sons one of whom died as an infant and two surviving into manhood. Donald married but had no children.  Hugh died as a fairly young man, not long after coming to Canada – never marrying that we are aware of.

Peter was quite well off having a farm covering  two 50 acre lots which sat side by side.  Lot 13 was purchased in 1847 for 12 pounds 10 shillings while Lot 12 was purchased in 1850 for 175 pounds.  In his will we learn that he bequeathed both lots to his brother Donald and his wife Catherine for their lifetime.  When they died, Lot 12 was bequeathed to John McLeod, son of his brother Angus: and the other, Lot 13, was then to revert to two sisters, Margaret and Nancy, still in Scotland.

Peter died in 1852.  Donald died sometime between 1861-1864. Donald’s wife remarried in 1864. Her second husband William Rose may have been the William Rose who died in King Township in 1883.  Catharine continued living on the farm until her death in 1898. In the Ontario land records Quit Claims for this parcel of land was found.  It seems that the Rose family wanted to buy the land but of course the sisters in Scotland (or their heirs) had to sign the Quit Claim stating they had no interest in claiming the land. The document was signed in 1900 with the names of the sister’s heirs and their locations in Scotland which set us on the path to finding our Scottish family.

The 1881 census finds William Rose and Catherine still on the farm.  He is now aged 75 and she is 64. With them is a Redmond family. Frank age 45 / Christina age 28 / William age 9 / James age 4.

Later census records will reveal that Frank (or Frances) is most likely a brother to Christina.  He is referred to as uncle by her children on the 1901 census. William (1872) and James (1877) Redmond are children of Christina. It is possible that their births may have been illegitimate although it doesn’t state so on their birth registrations.   I have found both of them in the census and other records using the surnames Redmond, Redman, or Rose.  On William’s birth registration the elder William Rose (husband of Catherine) is listed as father.  I have seen this elsewhere when grandfathers accepted the responsibility of raising the child as his own. On the 1891 census Catherine refers to Christina as a daughter.  Christina lives continually with Catherine from before she was 8 years of age until Catherine's death in 1898.  On James birth registration his father is listed as James Cassidy and he appears to use this surname as an adult.  He is James Cassidy on the 1911 census and as the informant on his mother’s death registration in 1929.  In 1891 Christina married  a widower George A. Stinson and has two daughters Florence Ethel (1892) and Maud Elizabeth (1894). George dies in 1898.  Frank Redmond is living with Christina on the 1901 and 1911 census and appears to still be single.

The 1891 census finds the family living in the same location.  Catherine is now a widow as her husband having probably died in 1883.  Christina  is listed as a married daughter but still uses the surname Redmond..The two boys William and James are using the surname Rose.

By the 1901 census Catharine is deceased.  We find that William and James are still using the surname Rose.  Christina is now a widow herself  having married in November of 1891 and her husband dying in 1898.  However she is listed  with the surname Rose. Her two daughters use the surname Stinson. Her brother Frances is living with them.

On the 1911 census William is not listed with the family. James is using the surname Cassidy. Christina and daughter Laura are using the surname Stinson while it appears that Florence is using the surname Ezard having married George Tilford Ezard 31 May 1911. Uncle Frank is still with the family.
