On the OPR Index his mother’s maiden name has been misinterpreted as “McCuay” but in the original record it is McCuaig.

Dugald married Mary Reid 21 Jan 1864 in the Parish of Oa, Argyll, Scotland

As far as I know Dugald and Mary had four children: John, Catherine, Peggy all born in Scotland and William who was born in Ontario, Canada.

Dugald died 27 May 1873 in Nassagaweya, County of Halton, Ontario, Canada

After Dugald’s death the family has been very difficult to track. On the 1841, the 1851 and 1861 census Dugald is listed with his father on the Farm of Giol in the Parish of Oa, Argyll, Scotland.

However  on the 1871 census we find Dugald and Mary with all four children living in Halton County in Ontario, Canada. The youngest, William being one year of age having been born in Canada.

Dugald dies in 1873 from consumption (tuberculosis) and we have not found Mary after that time.  John and  Peggy are living with relatives on the 1881 census but so far we have not found the rest of the family.

We find John, age 16,  living with his widowed Grandmother  Catherine Reid along with aunts Janet Reid and Mary (probably Marion) Reid and also uncle Hugh Reid in Nassagaweya, Halton, Ontario, Canada

Peggy (who is called Maggie on this record) age 13 is living with a widowed Aunt Annie (Smith) Campbell and her seven children also in Nassgaweya in Halton, Ontario, Canada.

What happened to the rest of the family?  We don’t know yet but are still digging.

I have assumed that what ever happened it couldn’t have been anything very good.  Why else would John and Peggy be living with other family members who were both widowed and perhaps having a tough time of it themselves.   Annie Campbell’s eldest child was the same age as Peggy (13 years of age) and her youngest was only 8 months old.  Her husband having died a little more than a year previously.
